Colours always play a major role in one's home. Depending on taste, there is a suitable furnishing trend: Minimalist styles that make do with just beige, brown and white, but also industrial and modern elegance that place a lot of emphasis on dark metallic surfaces and steel. If you are into retro design, geometric patterns or maximalism, then you can use lots of bold colours together. White and natural materials dominate the country house style, as they do in the Skandi interior, which also adds blue accents. Countless interior styles ultimately revolve around the use of colour (or lack thereof) to create a unique mood. Moreover, furnishing has changed in recent years and no longer focuses solely on design and functionality. Our home should reflect our personality and has become more than ever a place of retreat with which we identify. Therefore, the choice of interior colours is becoming increasingly important, because colours affect our feelings and the atmosphere in our homes. You are still not sure which sort of vibe you want to create in your home? Or you already know, but you're just not sure which tone will suit you best? No worries! Today, I'll show you how colours affect a room and your mood, give you 9 useful colour ideas and tell you what colour trends we can expect in the coming year.

Interior colours and their properties

First of all, a short digression will help to understand the effects of warm, cold and also the non-colours. The following effects are created with the use of these colours:
  • Black: The all-rounder par excellence. Black accessories can be found in almost every home and complement any interior style and are a great contrast to white walls, wooden floors or naturally coloured textiles. Large furniture such as sofas, wardrobes or beds in black should only be used in large rooms, just like using black as a wall colour. Otherwise, a dark cosiness can quickly seem constricting and sad.
  • White: As a wall colour, white dominates many homes. And that's a good thing because it expands rooms and makes them look open and clear. With wooden furniture or unprocessed materials, white home accessories also become total eye-catchers. You can combine white with all colours and materials, but be careful not to overdo it. White walls, white furniture and white textiles together can often appear clinical. Make it cosier with dark or colourful highlights.
  • Grey: Just like black and white, grey is a classic in the field of furnishings. Grey furniture loosens up white-painted rooms and looks nice and bright next to black furnishings. The colour tone is timeless and provides the necessary calm under flashier elements.
  • Brown: Those who like it natural and comfortable at the same time choose brown for the living area. Nothing beats a comfortable leather armchair, shelves and side tables in dark wood or brown cosy blankets. Brown blends perfectly with a rustic interior but is also extremely calming in other styles.
  • Blue: Cool and maritime. Blue is and remains an all-time favourite in interior design. Walls or home accessories in dark blue let you unwind, while lighter shades of blue visually enlarge the room. Blue decorative elements and textiles look clean, fresh and reminiscent of a short wellness holiday. If you are aiming for a maritime interior or are a fan of the Skandi style, blue is a real essential for your home!
  • Green: The colour green stands for harmony, hope and nature. With green plants, textiles or lamps, you can bring balance to your four walls. In addition, a green environment can help to increase concentration and be more creative. Set up your own Urban Jungle or create a peaceful environment with sage green decorations.
  • Yellow: Wherever you want to work productively or in exchange with others, the colour yellow is recommended. Yellow tones are soothing and good for the nerves, they can increase the ability to learn, reduce anxiety and contribute positively to the conversation. A sunny wall enlarges the room and yellow textiles or decorative elements embellish every room. Depending on the intensity of the colour, caution is advised, but you can still warm up your home with small accents of yellow.
  • Orange: A warm orange also makes you more cheerful and active, counteracts tiredness and is especially suitable for sociable as well as small rooms. Orange-coloured accessories in the kitchen or dining room spread a cosy atmosphere and invite you to linger. Combined with earth and red tones, you can create a cosy and warm home.
  • Red: If you want to make a statement, use red. Red radiates energy and encourages you to be active. In addition, you create a much warmer mood with red than with blue or green and create a real feel-good place with darker tones such as Bordeaux. But caution is advised with red in particular, because its intensity can make you restless or overwhelm the room. So choose your red home accents wisely and add a few elegant touches to your home.
  • Pink: Pink offers the optimal relaxation and calming. Like other pastel shades, the colour lowers aggression, soothes you and is therefore the optimal colour for all bedrooms. Pink goes perfectly with a décor dominated by white and light-coloured woods, but can also lighten up the mood in more masculine home styles. Plush cushions, blankets and storage stools in soft pink are perfect for any room.
  • Purple : Totally in vogue and rightly so: Purple. Just like blue, light purple tones radiate wellness and relaxation and bring the ambience of fresh flowers into your home. Whether as a wall colour, for curtains or for vases - you're always doing something right with purple. However, if you choose a strong violet to aubergine and plum blue, the whole thing becomes much warmer and cosier. Dark cushions and blankets look both extravagant and inviting. So find the perfect shade of purple for you and beautify your home.

9 tips for colour design

  1. Unity through matching: If you coordinate individual textiles or pieces of furniture with the floor or wall colour of a room, everything looks very uniform and well thought out.
  2. Using pastel colours: Pink, purple, baby blue, mint green or delicate vanilla yellow. Not only do they provide the necessary reassurance in the nursery, but they can also invite you to snuggle up in the hallway, living room or bedroom.
  3. Natural shades for the kitchen: Depending on the colour of the kitchen unit and the tiles, your cooking paradise can quickly appear cold or sterile. However, if you use curtains, spice racks or textiles in warm earthy tones, everything looks much cosier.
  4. Colourful accents in the bathroom: Similar to the kitchen, the bathroom can also quickly appear boring. If the entire room is tiled in white, it yearns for a few colourful influences. Bath mats, towels and bathroom sets in radiant colours make your small sanitary unit much more homely.
  5. Green accessories for a good mood: As we already know, green stands for hope and harmony. In the form of plants or home accessories and textiles, it improves the mood in any room and reminds us of nature.
  1. Coordinate dining and living area: If you don't have the luxury of a dining room, dining and relaxing TV evenings will probably take place in the same room. For perfect unity, match the corresponding furniture in colour and create a harmonious living area.
  2. Ocean ambience in the bathroom: If not in the bathroom, then where. Swim right out to sea in your bathtub by creating a nautical look with shades of blue and turquoise. Use sea decorations with lighthouses, shells or anchors to put you in the holiday mood when you get ready for work in the morning.
  3. Warm colours for cosiness: A tried and tested tip, but still extremely useful. If you want to make your four walls a retreat for cuddling and dreaming, go for warm colours. On the walls, on the furniture or in the form of textiles - it doesn't matter. Brown, red, orange and red-violet always welcome all guests with friendly warmth.
  4. Light, cool colours for small rooms: Not only do light shades enlarge small rooms, but also cool nuances. Paint your walls a light blue, blue-grey or blue-green to create a deep effect and give your mind space to unfold.

Colour trends 2023 - What will we be decorating like?

Many trending colours will continue to hold their own in 2023. Purple, green and grey in particular will be very popular in the coming months. Trendy colour palettes continue to consist of light and relaxed tones such as Wellness Blue or the very similar Dove Grey. Equally soothing are ochre, beige or natural colours and materials to match sustainable furnishings. Nevertheless, a colourful mix is also desired in many places, we are moving away from partly colourless furnishings and adding pink or orange accents.
While in 2022 the colour of the year chosen by Pantone was a violet shade with Very Peri, we will probably see more Digital Lavender in 2023. However, this does not only apply to the living area but also to clothing and accessories. Digital Lavender is as cheerful as it is calming, which is why it is so versatile. Together with white, grey or brown, it forms a stimulating splash of colour full of energy, but a refined overall image is maintained. Together with blue, pink and yellow you are more daring, but you can create an open and cheerful mood.
Green was also already known to us as a popular colour. In recent times, especially the cool sage green has been used everywhere: Walls, ceilings, sofas, lamps, clothes, shoes, and even drinks. And for good reason! As we already know, it symbolises hope and supports a sustainable look. With tones like emerald green, you also ensure the necessary elegance in your four walls.
It remains exciting to see what 2023 has in store in terms of interior design, but it can be observed that above all the feeling of well-being in one's own four walls will continue to be the focus, as will the requirement to furnish neatly and functionally, but no less personal, friendly and cosy. With the right colours, you are already taking a step in the right direction. Discover our home accessories in trendy colours now and embellish your home!
