Do you love cooking with fresh herbs? Then you should definitely grow your own herb garden. It’s so easy to do and you don’t necessarily need a green thumb. Today I’m going to show you a few cool tips and tricks to grow perfect herbs, how to make herbs from the supermarket last longer and which other plants you can cultivate in your own home.

1. Grow your own microgreens

Microgreens are particularly easy to grow at home without much effort. Microgreens are small herbs or lettuce plants with a high level of vitamins that are harvested in the germination phase. As such, growing them is quick and easy - you don’t even need a balcony or garden. If you want to know more then take a look at our article ‘Growing microgreens - this is how to do it’ in the Relax Mag. There you’ll find step by step instructions for perfect microgreens.

2. Extend the life of purchased herbs

Herbs bought from the supermarket often don’t last long. This is because a large number of plants are planted in a particularly small area to ensure that herbs pots looks as lush as possible. Unfortunately, the plants then cannibalise each others roots and don’t survive long. You can stop this from happening by repotting the pants into several plant pots soon after purchasing. This will help them last longer.

3. Regrowing

Regrowing isn’t just fun, it’s also sustainable and saves money. By regrowing plants, you grow something new out of scraps that you would normally throw away. You can do this by, for example, putting the root of an onion or the stalk of a head of lettuce back into water. The vegetables will then grow again and you will soon be able to harvest something new. This also works for peppers, ginger, leeks and carrots.

4. Plants from seeds

You can also easily grow something new from seeds. In this case you’ll need to have a little more patience before you see the first results. But when you do, you’ll really see them. This works with an avocado pit, for example, or with tomato seeds. After some time plants will grow from the seeds again and these plants can then bear fruit.

5. The right equipment

Whether it's growing new plants, repotting or regrowing, having the right accessories for your own herb garden is important. You can’t go wrong with seedling pots or seed trays. These provide the perfect climate for your plants and ensure they thrive. With the appropriate signage, you also always know exactly what you have planted where.
