What are our favourite foods right now? What trends are coming our way this year? Just like furnishing or clothing, our diet changes over the years and we develop new needs for what we consume daily. A need for health and sustainability is increasing - for our sake, but also the sake of the environment. While I have already presented this year's big food trends, which are mainly related to our lifestyle and mindset, today I will go into more detail about the new it-foods and most popular foods of 2022. Whether it's a vegetarian approach, a healthy gut or simply culinary curiosity that's the driving force: some dishes and foods are either completely new or are increasingly in focus these days. Learn all about trendy, nutritious food that you should try in this post!

It-Foods of the Year

  • Miso: Miso is a seasoning paste that you probably know from Japanese restaurants and the popular miso soup served there. But the seasoning paste is extremely versatile and healthy too! Miso paste, which, by the way, is made from soybeans and rice, ensures healthy intestinal flora and can help against gastrointestinal ailments or high blood pressure. You can use them in soups, savoury snacks, but also biscuits and puddings.
  • Meat alternatives: It is certainly already widely known that in the UK meat consumption has been declining for years. Alternative products to milk and meat are therefore becoming more popular and are gladly tried. This also results in events such as "Veganuary", where animal products are completely avoided for the whole month of January. Meat substitutes, which aim to be as close as possible to the real thing, are usually based on soy, peas or wheat and can be consumed in the form of nuggets, burger patties, fish fingers, sausages and much more. Nevertheless, you don't have to cut meat out of your diet completely. As we already know from our first post, it is also great if greater awareness of one's meat consumption as well as a reduction of it can be achieved.
  • Nut spread: Speaking of veganism: What has already become an indispensable part of the kitchen for that lifestyle has now conquered the hearts of many other households as well. Various nut spreads are becoming increasingly popular and are also high in fibre and often sugar-free as well as free of palm oil. Most spreads contain dates, which is where they get their natural sweetness. But you can also find other delicious ingredients in them, such as cocoa, coconut, cinnamon and nuts like peanuts or cashews. Nut spreads are the perfect add-on for a wide variety of dishes. You can use them not only to refine your breakfast bread but also for porridge, bowls, biscuit dough and some cake batters.
  • Pre-mixed drinks: They say that trends always repeat themselves and that, for the most part, what has been before comes around again. This is also the case with so-called pre-mixed drinks, where cocktails and long drinks are sold ready-made in cans or another packaging. That too was a trend before and is rightly back now. Grab your drink from the can and take it with you as a delicious companion to your next outing in the park or night adventures with friends in the city. Pre-mixed cocktails are a good idea wherever people are having a cosy or lively get-together!

The trendiest foods in 2022

  • Fungi and medicinal mushrooms: We love mushrooms and eat more and more of them! The best thing about them is their versatility and the different types of mushrooms you can eat. Particularly trendy at the moment are medicinal mushrooms, which can be found now and then in fancy restaurants and which come from traditional Chinese medicine. Reishi, shiitake and Chaga are Asian medicinal mushrooms that contain particularly high levels of vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, mushrooms strengthen our immune system. The medicinal mushrooms are usually consumed in powder form, which is why they work great in cocoa or coffee. But regional mushrooms such as button mushrooms are also becoming increasingly popular. No matter whether as a side dish or main course: Mushrooms are always good. Mushroom picking is also a welcome pastime in nature, where you can escape from everyday life. But please always note which mushrooms are edible and how you have to prepare them!
  • Tenderstem Broccoli: Tenderstem Broccoli, also called Broccolini or Baby Broccoli, is an exotic vegetable that looks a lot like broccoli at first glance. it is a real superfood because it contains many minerals, trace elements and vitamins - and hardly any calories. Give it a try! If you prefer to use local vegetables, you can replace them with regular young broccoli.
  • Yuzu: Another brand-new it-food is the citrus fruit yuzu. However, its vitamin C content is about three times that of a lemon, which is why the yuzu powerfully strengthens the immune system. It is mostly grown in Asia and used for sweets such as ice cream, chocolate or cheesecake, but also in guacamole. Many professional chefs already swear by yuzu, so join them!
  • Seeds and kernels: Linseeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are local delicacies that are still in vogue. Just like chia seeds, you can use flax seeds for healthy pudding alternatives, plus they are high in fibre and have an anti-inflammatory effect. You can prepare delicious vegan pasta sauces with sunflower seeds, but you can also use both together in muesli or a salad. Pumpkin seeds are also good for our skin because of their zinc content, but they also contain magnesium, iron and selenium. Upgrade your food with a few seeds and kernels!
  • Hibiscus: At the very latest since the Pink Drink Trend 2021, we know that hibiscus works brilliantly in drinks. However, you can not only buy the vitamin-rich, edible blossoms in the form of tea but also boil them down into jelly. There is a real hype about hibiscus in the USA and more delicacies like hibiscus yoghurt are planned there. It remains exciting to see which dishes and drinks we will soon find hibiscus in, but you can also buy hibiscus flowers now and get creative!
  • Everything for a healthy gut: The nutrition and food trends put the gut in the spotlight as well. Because we know: A symptom-free intestine is not only important for our health but also provides an immense sense of well-being. The bacteria of the gut are responsible for many bodily processes, which is probably why gut health is becoming an important issue in the long term. To increase your well-being, you don’t just have to resort
