We’ve made it to September and autumn is fast approaching. The end of summer means the busiest and most eventful season is over – but this shift from warm to cold, from outdoor to indoor activities, and consequently a change in our wardrobe and habits, offers much potential for novelty. This is why September is Self-Improvement Month. During this time, try to be more self-reflective, review your goals and experiences, and re-evaluate your priorities. Are you open to a challenge? Then see the beginning of autumn as an opportunity to improve yourself, leave bad things behind and make room for positivity. Now is the best time to bring change into your life. So use the opportunity and make September your month for self-improvement to make your life a little more beautiful. You don't really know how to start? No problem! We have 14 tips for you on how to improve your quality of life and your personal goals.

14 tips on how to improve yourself in September

Self-Improvement Month is about adjusting your goals according to your current values and beliefs. You may have made New Year's resolutions, but a lot has changed in 9 months and it’s a good time to update them. So use the chance for a new start and reflect on your plans and wishes. Self-reflection is followed by the growth of your own personality. Analyse what you are currently satisfied with in life and where there is still potential. Self-improvement can refer to all kinds of situations in life. Become a better person morally, focus more on your mental health and well-being, develop yourself professionally and try out new hobbies that have always interested you. In short: Set new goals. Of course, you should think about what specifically you can do, and always make sure that they are realistic and actually achievable. Furthermore, it is good to set a time frame in which you think you can master new challenges. Also, have a friend by your side. Just like with sports, it helps to have a partner for motivation. Positive peer pressure and support from another person makes it much easier to achieve new goals. But what do you get in the end? When you focus on self-improvement, you inevitably take a closer look at your current life situation and relationships, as well as your strengths and weaknesses. Taking steps to improve yourself will then lead you to become more self-aware, to love yourself more, to leave your comfort zone, to become more motivated and to become mentally and physically healthier. Furthermore, it can become easier for you to make decisions, to find the purpose and meaning of your life and to improve relationships. The more self-reflective and healthy you are, the healthier your relationships with others will be. But how do you do it? These 14 tips can help:
  1. Spend time with loved ones: Stay close with your friends and family. Acknowledge their contribution to your life and check in with them from time to time to see how they are doing. Suggest doing something new together - there's nothing like making great memories.
  2. Find a new passion Look for a good cause or a project that you are passionate about. Support it by volunteering or donating money. In other words, find a new personal goal.
  3. Get creative: It's always worth exercising your creativity. Even if you aren't an artist - give it a try and create something new. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece - a simple DIY project is a great start.
  4. Nutrition and exercise: Exercise, eat healthier and drink enough water. Everyone knows it but how often do we follow this advice? Do something good for your body and take more care of it. You will notice how much it affects your well-being, even if you start small.
  5. New knowledge and skill: Do what you've been putting off for ages. Learn a new language, get on a surfboard or start another hobby you've always dreamed of! Don’t put your interests on hold.
  6. Make a career start:Invest the time in further education you would like to do or make a change if your current job no longer makes you happy.
  7. Reorganise your free time: : Scrolling on social media or binge-watching series - it can take up hours. Try spending your time more meaningfully. Do hobbies that bring you joy, bake something, talk to people you love. You will notice the change in your mood in no time.
  8. It’s okay to say “no”: You are your priority. If you don't feel like doing something or are not responsible for a task, learn to say no. A healthy environment will accept it.
  9. To do lists FStart writing down daily tasks. Only take on what you can do and get into the habit of doing the most important task of the day first. Don’t make an overly ambitious plan and try breaking big tasks into smaller ones.
  10. Take a break: Everyone needs a break from time to time. Retreat, turn off the phone and do something for your well-being. A relaxing bath or meditation can become regular rituals.
  11. Communication is the key: Learn how to deal with constructive criticism and work on your communication skills in your professional and personal life. Active listening, responding rather than reacting - these are essential for a productive communication, and like any other skill, it takes time to master.
  12. Try out new recipesWhether you want to eat healthier or just want to try something new, it's always a good idea to experiment in the kitchen. Moreover, cooking is great fun and has a calming effect on many people.
  13. Tidy up - in every respect: The tidier you keep your home, the more positive it is for your mental health. Plus, you can think and work better in a clean environment. But sometimes you can also de-clutter your life: get rid of bad habits, unproductive ideas and toxic people.
  14. Reflect on your progress: Last but not least, you should also check in on how your plans are going and celebrate your wins - even small ones. Remain realistic and do not demand extremes from yourself. Self-improvement is only good if it has a positive effect on your well-being.
