If you’d like to live in a farmhouse - away from the busy and hectic city life - you don’t necessarily need to move to the countryside into an overly expensive country estate with lots of land to it. Instead, you could bring the country house style to your home and give your flat or house a makeover to reflect the art of cottage-style living.
We feel connected to nature, wish to slow down and are looking for peace and quiet. A natural living environment with bright rooms is an important aspect of the country house style. It allows us to retreat into our private space that is dominated by traditional, rustic furniture, bright colours, plants and flowers. Why is the country house style so fascinating?

The various furnishing styles mostly differ in the types of material processed and the shapes and colours that have been used. To achieve the traditional cottage flair, use furniture and accessories with fine detailing or ornamentation and elegantly curved shapes. The country house style is both cosy and rustic - so furniture with wear and tear fits perfectly. Look out for furniture that is made of wood, especially mango wood, ceramic or rattan. Generally, cottage-style furniture is not only decorative, but always practical and functional for everyday life. Country life goes back to simple values and is uncomplicated - which is exactly what the furnishings should reflect. Use natural decorations and change them according to the season. For example, put out traditional milk jugs and pewter bowls in the cold seasons and decorate your rooms with fresh flowers, such as peonies, lilacs or tulips, in the summer months. Milk jugs make ideal vases and can be a simple but beautiful accessory. The farmhouse style utilises modest colours, such as beige, cream, grey and white; these should be your first choice when it comes to selecting colours. They go perfectly with the warm brown tones of wood and rattan. White is dominantly used for furniture in the modern country house. But you can also use pastel tones, red-white or blue-white.
There are different interpretations of the country house style depending on the region you’re in. For example, in Germany the farmhouse style is orientated towards southern German or Austrian rural villas; whereas in France and Italy, maritime styles with earthy tones and terracotta tiles are dominantly used. Our English country houses or cottages contain a mix of antique furnishings, cosy armchairs, table lamps with fabric shades, and flowers. These can also be recreated in prints and paintings. In Scandinavia, on the other hand, minimalistic designs in white are most often the preferred interior style. The country house style is often influenced by other living trends, such as shabby chic or vintage style, as these also use similar elements that match the farmhouse style. You can be quite creative when it comes to revamping your home. Create a home flooded with light where everyone can feel at home - with the help of light colours, rustic furniture and accessories. Get inspired by our mood boards and embellish your home with delicate white furniture pieces, vintage decorations and beautiful wooden and rattan objects. Have fun redecorating your home!
